How to make tree hut sugar scrubs at home
First, let's take a look at Tree Hut's ingredient list and make a quick analysis.

I took three different scrubs from their range but as you can see their ingredient lists are about the same and consist of
sugar -exfoliator
glycerine - humectant
polysorbate 20 - surfactant, can emulsify a small % of oils
💜Silica - gelling agent, thickener for oils💜
oils/shea butter
extracts - usually powdered extracts to act as extra exfoliating particles
preservative
fragrance
antioxidant
➡️Silica can make oil gels and thicken them quite nicely so if you want to make this type of scrub you do need this ingredient.⬅️
What is interesting about the Tree Hut scrub is that they most likely don’t use a lot of oils. Based on the texture and thickness of their body polishes the Silica is used at 2-5% so everything after that has to be lower than 2-5%. Furthermore, polysorbate 20 is a “weak” solubilizer used to emulsify small amounts of oils (essential oils, fragrance oils) and that’s why I think these scrubs contain fewer oils and butter than you think.
I tried using it in different ratios of 2-5% and I will be sharing three versions of my scrub, the fourth formula is for patrons only.
You can make these scrubs with or without glycerine, substitte oils, exfoliators, colors and fragrances but make sure you have enough liquids to wet Silica.
For a basic scrub with Silica, you need sugar, silica, polysorbate 20 or polysorbate 80, a carrier oil, and a preservative.
Let’s take a look at my first formula
Feel free to substitute the oils in my formulation for the oil that you have on hand.
1. Combine the B and C phases and melt them in the double boiler.
2. In the separate beaker combine the D phase and add it to the A phase once it is melted and cold off to 45-50C.
3. Once the mixture reaches 40C add the exfoliators. Stir to combine
This body scrub has a texture of thick gel as you can see on the pictures above.
