HOW TO MAKE EMULSIFIED SUGAR SCRUBS. THREE SCRUBS - THREE EMULSIFIERS

I often get asked about substituting emulsifying wax in certain products. While in many ways changing an emulsifying system can have a great impact on the final consistency of a lotion or cream, I found that in anhydrous formulations (body butter, body balm, emulsified sugar scrub) they mostly change the way the product slips on the skin.

I've decided to make three emulsified sugar scrubs with the same formula except for the emulsifier and fragrance oil. I used the following emulsifiers:

I was shooting for a creamy, soft, and stable scrub texture with a good amount of exfoliants. The recipe I am sharing with you today is pretty basic and easily customizable. I chose cocoa, and shea butter for their amazing softening and moisturizing benefits, stearic acid for its thickening properties, cetyl alcohol goes in here because it adds a nice slip to the final product; sunflower oil because it's light, affordable, and has a long shelf life. You can use a different butter combination and use a different carrier oil or even a few oils. Including oil-soluble actives, extracts and infusions will bring your products to a whole new level, so feel free to play around with your ingredients. That's how we learn best.

The formula I'm sharing with you is for the scrub base itself. Sugar and other exfoliants are not included in the formula. The thing is that we all love different levels of exfoliation, and what's good for me might not be so good for you. However, I will give you the exact amounts of the exfoliants I used in this project, so you have a place to start.
